Since its launch in 2011, Siri has been the pioneer of voice assistants integrated into smartphones. However, with the emergence of generative artificial intelligence (AI), notably OpenAI's ChatGPT, Apple finds itself needing to modernize its assistant to stay competitive. Despite significant efforts, Siri struggles to achieve the fluidity and relevance of its competitors, raising questions about the future of AI at Apple.

Apple's efforts to modernize Siri

Apple has undertaken a major overhaul of Siri by integrating advanced language models, some reaching up to 150 billion parameters, to improve understanding and relevance of responses. These models are tested internally and show performance close to the latest versions of ChatGPT.

Additionally, Apple has introduced "Apple Intelligence," a suite of AI-based features, such as text generation, image creation, and Siri's response personalization. These tools aim to offer a richer and more interactive user experience.

Persistent challenges and criticisms

Despite these advances, Siri continues to suffer from limitations, notably "hallucinations" where the assistant provides incorrect or inconsistent information. These issues hinder the large-scale deployment of new features, with Apple favoring a cautious approach to ensure the reliability of its assistant.

Moreover, disagreements within Apple's leadership on the strategy to adopt for Siri have slowed progress. Some executives advocate for rapid integration of new technologies, while others insist on resolving existing issues before any major launch.

As Apple invests heavily to modernize Siri and integrate advanced AI features, the voice assistant remains behind its competitors. Technical challenges and internal strategic disagreements hinder its evolution. To remain a major player in the AI field, Apple will need to overcome these obstacles and offer a version of Siri that meets user expectations.
