Meta Launches Hatch: The Consumer AI Agent for DoorDash, Etsy, Reddit, and WhatsApp
Meta is preparing to roll out Hatch, its consumer AI agent platform, in early September. Goals: act directly on DoorDash, Etsy, Reddit, Yelp, Outlook. A new Watermelon model will follow in October. Strategic angle: Zuckerberg seeks to monetize AI beyond advertising.
According to The Information, Meta is preparing for the early September 2026 launch of Hatch, its first consumer AI agent. The clear objective: to provide Meta with an "actionable assistant" layer capable of competing with ChatGPT Operator, Gemini Spark, and Claude Computer Use. A new internal model called Watermelon is planned for October to equip Hatch with a dedicated brain.
What Hatch Does
According to internal documents obtained by The Information, Hatch is trained to navigate and interact directly with third-party web services. The initial confirmed list includes:
- DoorDash — order food without using the app
- Etsy — search, compare, buy
- Reddit — browse, summarize, post
- Yelp — find a restaurant based on complex criteria
- Microsoft Outlook — manage email and calendar
Prototypes show a customizable dashboard where users can see available "skills": automatic fitness tracking, travel itinerary planning, conversation summarization, information filtering. Each skill is a mini-agent running in the background.
Entry via WhatsApp
Meta is also preparing a Hatch integration into WhatsApp: users will be able to invoke an AI agent directly in chat. The limited trial starts this week according to BeInCrypto. This is the real trump card: WhatsApp has 3 billion active users monthly, and invoking an agent in DM normalizes usage.
No one else can put an AI agent in the keyboard of 3 billion people overnight. It's Meta's structural lever.
The Watermelon Model: New In-House Brain
The Watermelon model — internal code name — is supposed to replace part of the Llama models currently used in Meta AI's back-end, with an architecture optimized for agent tasks: action, planning, multiple API calls. Few technical details have leaked, but the expectation is that Watermelon will be proprietary closed, unlike the open-weight Llama line — a turning point if confirmed.
Zuckerberg's Strategy: Monetizing AI Beyond Ads
Meta has invested tens of billions of dollars in AI since 2022 (compute, talent, R&D). Its reliance on advertising as the only revenue channel is becoming a strategic risk: European and American regulators are tightening the screws on targeting. Agent revenues could provide a diversification:
- Commission on transactions initiated by Hatch (DoorDash, Etsy…)
- Premium subscriptions (like Gemini Spark at $99.99/month)
- B2B API for developers who want to expose their services to Hatch
Zuckerberg quoted internally: Hatch is a "future revenue building block" more than just a tool for users.
The Competitive Landscape
The field is filling up quickly:
- OpenAI Operator — limited early access, enterprise focus for now
- Google Gemini Spark — $99.99/month, 24/7 agent (see our article)
- Anthropic Computer Use — developer-first API
- Apple Intelligence Siri — native on iOS but limited to Apple apps
- Meta Hatch — arrives with the largest potential audience
Meta has a disadvantage: it starts after everyone else. It has two advantages: WhatsApp and being free to start — an approach opposite to Google Spark. It's the "frictionless consumer product" line vs. "premium tool for power users".
The Nuance
Three reservations:
- Meta has a complicated history with AI launches. Meta AI in Instagram/Messenger DMs hasn't transformed the market; the Llama open-weights have had more impact with developers than with the general public.
- Partners will grumble. DoorDash, Etsy, and others may not necessarily want a Meta agent to come between their brand and their customers. Expect API tensions in the coming months — even blockages, as Apple might do with ChatGPT-iMessage.
- Privacy remains explosive. Meta + agent reading your Outlook emails + browsing your DoorDash orders + acting on your Etsy account = an unprecedented behavioral data aggregator. European regulators will take an interest.
What to Watch
Three milestones:
- The exact launch date (probably the first week of September)
- The monetization model revealed — commission, subscription, or dual?
- The European availability. With the AI Act in effect since August 2, any agent acting on personal data must meet specific transparency, kill switch, and human review requirements. Is Meta ready?
One thing is certain: the battle of consumer AI agents has just found its fourth serious contender. The winner, in this specific category, won't be the one with the best model — it will be the one with the largest invocation surface. Meta is playing this card to the fullest.
