The rise of AI-generated content is impacting many sectors, and the music world is no exception. According to Alexis Lanternier, CEO of Deezer, 10% of the content submitted daily to the platform is now AI-generated. This trend, he says, disrupts the music ecosystem and drives the company to act to preserve the integrity of its services.

A sharp increase in parasitic content

The explosion of AI-generated content on Deezer has highlighted an unprecedented issue: the proliferation of what Lanternier calls “parasitic content”. These are automatically generated tracks, often lacking true artistic value, that flood the platform. Among them are noisy or repetitive pieces created to trick algorithms and generate artificial revenue.

This situation threatens not only user experience but also genuine artists, by diluting their visibility in a sea of low-quality content.

A technological and patented response

To counter this threat, Deezer has developed a tool to detect AI-generated content and filed two patents to protect this innovation. The goal is clear: to identify and exclude fraudulent or automatically generated content before it further disrupts algorithms and user experience.

Among the initiatives considered, Deezer is working on creating a digital watermark to mark AI-generated tracks. This system would not only identify them but also exclude them from recommendation algorithms, thus offering better visibility to human and authentic artists.

Vocal cloning: an additional challenge

In addition to AI-generated tracks, Deezer is also tackling the issue of cloned voices. This practice, facilitated by generative AI, involves reproducing an artist's voice to produce new tracks, often without their consent. It's an ethical and legal issue that jeopardizes intellectual property and artistic identity.

With its patented tools, Deezer aims to detect these cloned voices and prevent their distribution on the platform.

Preserving the music ecosystem

For Alexis Lanternier, the challenge goes beyond mere technical detection. The proliferation of AI-generated content represents a major disruption to the music ecosystem. Deezer aims to protect not only artists but also users, ensuring access to quality content and preserving the authenticity of musical creation.

Towards augmented but regulated music

While generative AI offers fascinating opportunities for the future of music, Deezer emphasizes the need to set clear boundaries. By investing in technological solutions to detect and manage AI-generated content, the platform hopes to strike a balance between innovation and creator protection.

With initiatives like the digital watermark or cloned voice detection, Deezer positions itself as a responsible player in the face of the upheavals in the music industry. It remains to be seen if these efforts will be enough to contain the AI tidal wave in the field of artistic creation.
