An AI for Everyone, Not Just a Few

Arthur Mensch keeps reiterating: artificial intelligence is worthless if it remains the privilege of a handful of players. The CEO and co-founder of Mistral AI positions himself as a champion of an open and sovereign AI, presented as a direct alternative to American giants like OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google^[1]. His belief: a technology confined to the labs of a few companies loses its collective value. It must, he says, be made popular—in the true sense of the word.

This philosophy is not new at Mistral. From the start, the company has bet on freely deployable open-source models to create demand, before building a complementary business model with optimized paid versions^[5]. A deliberate strategy: democratize a technology that its founders previously developed for closed American labs^[4].

Sovereignty and Massive Adoption, Two Sides of the Same Coin

For Mensch, the issue goes beyond mere technological competition. He contrasts the notion of sovereignty with that of concentration, warning against a scenario where Europe becomes dependent on an extra-European oligopoly^[1]. The leader has also warned that the continent risks becoming a technological "vassal state" if it doesn't engage more in the AI race^[4].

But sovereignty, according to him, cannot be decreed: it is built through adoption. This is the whole point of launching the Le Chat mobile app on iOS and Android, designed to quickly reach millions of users and compete directly with ChatGPT^[2]. Without massive usage, there's no solid ecosystem; without an ecosystem, there's no real independence.

A Risky but Deliberate Gamble

This strategy involves obvious challenges:

Convincing the general public to adopt a European tool against well-established giants
Financing rapid growth while maintaining the openness of the models
Resisting the temptation of excessive regulation, which Arthur Mensch considers counterproductive for open innovation

Yet the message is clear: for Mistral, the future of generative AI will not only play out in laboratories but in the pockets of users.
