On July 30, 2026, during Tim Cook's last earnings call as Apple's CEO (having announced his departure at the end of the fiscal year), a comment slipped in response to an analyst's question shook the ecosystem: Apple plans to charge heavy users of Siri AI through a dedicated iCloud+ tier.

No date. No pricing. No threshold for transition communicated. But the direction is set: the new Siri, long presented as “included” in the iPhone experience, will become partially paid.

What exactly is Siri AI?

We must distinguish between the “historical” Siri (the one that sets alarms and plays music since 2011) and Siri AI — the “Apple Intelligence” completely revamped and announced at WWDC 2024, with its completed version deployed with iOS 19 since fall 2025.

In concrete terms, Siri AI is:

A proprietary on-device LLM (running locally on A18 chips and above) for simple and personal queries
A Private Cloud Compute — Apple’s encrypted infrastructure, without logs — for heavy queries
A fallback ChatGPT (OpenAI partnership) for what Apple does not want or cannot handle
A system integration: reading and acting in Messages, Mail, Calendar, Photos, compatible third-party apps
Visual capabilities: “Look at this photo and tell me what you see,” “write a reply to this email in the tone of my last exchange”

Who can use it today?

Not everyone. Access to Siri AI (Apple Intelligence) is conditioned by:

An iPhone equipped with an A17 Pro or higher chip — that is, iPhone 15 Pro / Pro Max, and the entire iPhone 16 / 17 / 18 line
An iPad with an M1 or higher chip
A Mac with an M1 or higher chip
iOS 19 / iPadOS 19 / macOS 15 (Sequoia) or higher versions
A supported language: French has been available since April 2025 (progressive rollout since English launched late 2024)

In practical terms: owners of iPhone 14 or earlier — which is the majority of the global fleet in circulation — do not have access to Siri AI. For them, only the old Siri works.

The emerging business model

What Cook outlined: users who run Siri AI intensively (dozens or hundreds of heavy queries per day) are too costly for Apple in terms of cloud computing. Each query sent to Private Cloud Compute mobilizes Apple Silicon servers, with a real marginal cost.

The chosen solution: iCloud+ — Apple's paid offering for storage and some premium features — becomes the default monetization layer for AI at Apple. The existing tiers (€0.99 / €2.99 / €9.99 / €29.99 per month for storage) are expected to be enriched with associated Siri AI query quotas.

Tim Cook: “It is still early to say what intensive use represents in terms of costs. We do not yet have a complete plan.”

No complete plan, but a clear direction

Cook was very cautious. Three elements are worth noting:

No quota is currently applied, including for developers and public beta testers.
The envisaged mechanism involves “moving up the iCloud+ stack” — so not a separate “Siri Pro” subscription, but an enhancement of existing tiers.
This is the first time Apple has publicly confirmed that it is considering charging for a Siri AI feature. Previously, the company had always maintained that AI would remain an included differentiator with the hardware.

Why this shift?

1. Inference costs are indefensible at scale

Apple sells more than 230 million iPhones a year. If even 10% of them run Siri AI intensively, we are talking about tens of millions of GPU queries per day, just for the cloud part. At this volume, even the most optimized Apple Silicon infrastructure becomes a major expense — several billion dollars per year.

2. The “all-inclusive” model has reached its limit

Historically, Apple monetizes the service through hardware: you pay for the iPhone once, everything is included (except optional Music, TV+, iCloud+). This model holds as long as the marginal cost of use remains low. Generative AI breaks this equation: each query has a real variable cost.

3. Google and OpenAI have already normalized paid models

Gemini Pro (€20/month), ChatGPT Plus (€23/month), Copilot Pro (€22/month) — the market has accepted the idea that AI is worth a subscription. Apple takes no perception risk by aligning: it catches up with what its competitors are already practicing.

What it changes for users

In the short term, nothing. No quota is in effect. You can use Siri AI as much as you want if you have compatible hardware.

In the medium term (2026-2027), expect:

An indication of “remaining AI queries” in Settings, similar to the iCloud storage counter
Premium features (long context, images, more detailed responses) reserved for paid tiers
An automatic switch to free ChatGPT when the Apple quota is exhausted (with the privacy limitations that entails)

The remaining question

At what tier do we switch from “included” to “paid”? 50 queries per day? 200? 1000? This is where public perception plays out. Too low, and Apple risks a wave of criticism (“they sell me a €1,500 iPhone and I have to pay extra for Siri”). Too high, and the mechanism will only serve hyper users who will have nothing to complain about anyway.

One thing is certain: the successor to Tim Cook — who will take the reins at the end of 2026 — will inherit a hot topic. Charging for a premium iPhone and its key features will require marketing finesse, which Apple, historically, has mastered. But the era of “all-inclusive” is coming to an end.
