As artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly transforms the global financial landscape, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is taking the lead by developing a framework for responsible and ethical AI adoption in the financial sector. This initiative aims to balance technological innovation with consumer protection, ensuring transparent and secure use of AI in financial services.

In its 2024-2025 annual report, the RBI announces the creation of an expert committee tasked with developing a "Framework for Responsible and Ethical AI Adoption" (FREE-AI) in the financial sector. Chaired by Professor Pushpak Bhattacharyya from IIT Bombay, this committee brings together AI specialists, financial regulation experts, and data governance professionals. Their mission: to assess the current state of AI adoption, identify potential risks such as algorithmic biases or privacy breaches, and propose appropriate governance mechanisms.

This framework is part of the RBI's broader goal to strengthen the financial system's resilience against challenges posed by AI. Governor Shaktikanta Das highlighted the concentration risks associated with excessive reliance on a limited number of technology providers, which could lead to systemic vulnerabilities in case of failure.

Towards Ethical AI Integration in Financial Services

AI adoption in the Indian financial sector is booming, with applications ranging from fraud detection to predictive analytics and customer service automation. Major institutions like HDFC Bank and the State Bank of India are exploring AI use to enhance operational efficiency and customer experience.

However, this rapid transformation requires appropriate regulation to prevent abuses. The FREE-AI framework aims to establish clear guidelines on data protection, informed consent, and security while encouraging innovation. It also includes monitoring mechanisms to ensure financial institutions comply with established ethical standards.
