Wikidia Embraces AI: Towards a Faster, Yet Still Human, Encyclopedia

The Wikimedia Foundation is embarking on a strategic shift: starting July 1st, artificial intelligence will join Wikidia to support its contributors, without replacing humans.

On Wednesday, April 30, the Wikimedia Foundation unveiled its artificial intelligence strategy, which will run from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2028, with annual — or exceptional — reviews if necessary. The stated goal: to give back time to volunteer editors by automating certain tasks like information retrieval, translation, and the detection of recurring patterns. AI will also help overcome technical hurdles, particularly in content moderation: it will assist moderators by identifying problematic contributions and streamlining their repetitive tasks. Another notable advancement: assisting new contributors through an AI-guided mentorship system to ease their integration.

Humans remain at the heart of the free encyclopedia?

Despite this rise in automation, the Foundation emphasizes the irreplaceable role of humans. “Their rigor and commitment to reliable encyclopedic knowledge are qualities that artificial intelligence cannot replace,” it reminds us. Contributors will now focus on high-value roles: editing, community discussions, consensus-building, and making editorial decisions. This shift illustrates a broader transformation affecting all structures where production and moderation rely on humans. We can already foresee three additional impacts: better linguistic inclusion through assisted translation, finer detection of abusive behavior, and skill enhancement for contributors trained in using AI tools.

AI is thus set to be a valuable assistant, but not a replacement. A coexistence to watch closely, as other community platforms ponder their own digital transformation.
