American researchers have developed FaceAge, an artificial intelligence capable of estimating a person's biological age from a simple photo of their face. This innovation, published in The Lancet Digital Health, is based on a deep learning algorithm trained on nearly 59,000 portraits of healthy adults. Tested on more than 6,000 cancer patients, the AI revealed that these patients had an average biological age 4.79 years older than their chronological age.

Biological age, a reflection of the actual state of our cells, differs from chronological age. It is influenced by factors such as lifestyle, stress, or dietary habits. FaceAge could thus become a valuable tool for tailoring medical treatments based on the patient's actual capacity to tolerate them. For example, a 75-year-old patient with a biological age of 65 might tolerate intensive radiotherapy, unlike a younger but biologically older patient.

Ethical and Societal Implications to Consider

While FaceAge offers promising prospects for personalized medicine, its use also raises ethical questions. The possibility for insurers or employers to access information about biological age could lead to discrimination. Researchers therefore emphasize the need to ensure the ethical use of this technology, exclusively in the patient's interest.

Moreover, although FaceAge has been trained on a diverse database, biases may persist, particularly based on individuals' ethnic origin or gender. It is therefore essential to continue research to improve the AI's accuracy and fairness.
