Elon Musk Files a New Lawsuit Against OpenAI

Elon Musk, co-founder of OpenAI, recently filed a new lawsuit against the company, accusing it of straying from its original mission and prioritizing profit.

Background of the lawsuit

In February, Elon Musk had previously filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, which he later withdrew without explanation. Today, he has renewed his efforts in a California court. Co-founded by Musk in 2015 alongside Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, Musk left the organization in 2018. Originally, OpenAI was established as a non-profit organization aimed at developing beneficial artificial general intelligence for humanity. However, after attracting significant investments, notably from Microsoft, OpenAI changed its model to become a for-profit company, which has displeased Musk.

Musk's accusations

Musk accuses OpenAI of betraying its original mission and transforming into a commercial enterprise. According to Musk, Sam Altman and other leaders exploited Musk's humanistic concerns about the dangers of AI to secure funding. This fraud accusation particularly targets the agreement between OpenAI and Microsoft. Musk claims that the large language models developed by OpenAI were not part of the licensing agreement with Microsoft, which invested billions of dollars to access this technology. The purpose of this lawsuit is to determine the validity of this agreement.

Response and rivalry context

OpenAI responded to Musk's accusations in an open letter, stating that Musk had agreed in 2017 to adopt a more commercial approach, including the creation of a dedicated department. OpenAI further claims that Musk wanted to become the principal shareholder, control the board of directors, and assume the role of CEO.

A strategy to slow down competitors?

Musk's new lawsuit against OpenAI illustrates the growing rivalry in the field of artificial intelligence. By accusing OpenAI of betrayal and questioning the legitimacy of its business agreements, Musk seems determined to slow down the rise of his competitors. Musk also criticized a partnership between OpenAI and Apple, claiming it posed a major security risk, and banned his employees from using iPhones. Meanwhile, he continues to develop his own projects, such as xAI, which he announced in 2023... shortly after calling for a moratorium on AI development. In this context, the battle for control of AI and its commercial applications is intensifying.
